PARTICLE TECHNOLOGY
/descrizione
The Division called Particulate Technology (PARTEC), collect the following Working Parties:
- Filtration and Separation
- Crystallization
- Mechanics and Particulate solids
- Drying
- Comminution and Classification
- Characterisation of Particulate systems
- Agglomeartion
This is the result of some considerations.
It is estimated that about 60% by value of the products produced in the chemical and allied industries are either solid (pigments, pharmaceutical, polymers, vitamins, detergents, agrochemidispersions, paints, inks, etc.). The main unit operation adopted to obtain chemical products in the solid state at room temperature is the crystallization.
The crystals outgoing the crystallization section have to be separated by centrifugation from the mother solution, dryed and packaged by means the so-called down-stream processes.
Sometimes, a further separation among coarse and small crystals have to be accomplished by classification before packaging.
The quality of the final product is affected by the performances of both the crystallization and the down-stream processes.
It is therefore very important the co-operation among the relevant Working Parties in the framework of a specific Subject Division. Characterisation of particles and their interactions is essential to examine the above mentioned processes efficiency, but also to develop new production process by the so-called formulation technology, based on agglomeration, comminution, melt crystallization over cooling belts, etc.
Solid Handling, Formulation Technology and Drying Technology are ranked highest in relation to a market advantage that could be gained by successful implementation of state of art technology in this area.
/struttura operativa
Membership and management of the division
The technical group on Particulate Technology will be managed by an Advisory Committee consisting in the Italian Delegates to the European Working Parties, related to PARTEC, that is:
- G. Alfano - WP Comminution and Classification
- A. Chianese (Chairman) - WP Crystallization
- G. Donsì - WP Characterisation and Particulate Systems
- F. Paroli - WP Crystallization
- P. Salatino - WP Characterisation and Particulate Systems
/attività
PARTEC will focus the scientific and technical aspects of:
- solid processing technologies;
- quality control of solid processes and products.
In particular the following keys areas will be monitered:
- Characterisation of particles, their interactions and intrinsic properties
-
Engineering of equipment and processes based on new understanding of particulate systems, specifically
including investigation on:
- Solids handling, storage, mixing and classification
- Precipitation and crystallization
- Filtration and centrifugation
- Compactation, milling, granulation and tableting
- Atomisation, coating and drying
- Designing products with desired properties
- Formulation technology
- Measurements of solid characteristics by on-line sensors
- Modelling and simulation of solids processes.
On these areas PARTEC will carry out the following activities:
- Organization of Workshops and Conferences on the above mentioned key areas, in particular supervision and organization of the session Partcle Technology of the ICheaP’s Conferences
- Coordination of the activities of the Italian Delegates to European Working Parties related to PARTEC
- Organization of seminars for continuous education
- Dissemination of information on the particulate technology events at italian and international level by editing an yearly newsletter
- Promotion of formation of clusters among people from industry, design companies, research centres and university to submitt R&D applications at Italian and European level.
