Located
in the ancient city centre,
the palazzo was built at the beginning of the thirteenth century to house the
Curia del Comune (Municipal Curia), later becoming the Palazzo Giuridico (Law
Courts) and then the residence of the Podestà and of the People’s Captain. It
was named after the king who was imprisoned there from 1249 to 1271, Enzo, the
illegitimate son of Frederick II King of Sardinia, who was captured by the Bolognese
at the Battle of Fossalta. History tells us that the king’s forced residence
in the palazzo was in fact a “golden” imprisonment, since he was able to enjoy
poetry and the company of nobles. The royal prisoner was kept under lock and
key until the end of his days, however, and the Bolognese remembered him by
giving his name to the place where he had spent so many years.
