Palazzo Bo is in the historic centre of Padua,
a convenient location close to the Civic Museum of the Hermits, the Scrovegni
Chapel with the Giotto frescoes, the church of Sant'Antonio, and the main square.
The provincial capital of Padua (Padova to the locals) lies 37km west of Venice
on the edge of the Euganean Hills. The older part of the town has a medieval
aspect with its narrow arcaded streets, ancient bridges over the many arms of
the River Bacchiglione and the Byzantine domes of its churches.
The city of St Anthony and home to Italys second-oldest university, Padua
is also the site of one of the most remarkable works of late Gothic art (prefiguring
the Renaissance) in Northern Italy.
Palazzo Bo in
one of the main hystorical sites of the city.
In the first decades of the sixteenth century the various 'schools' scattered
throughout the districts of the city were housed in one single structure, the
Palazzo del Bo. Located near the street traditionally occupied by butcher's
shops, the building derived its name from the sign of the famous Hospitium Bovis
[Ox Inn] that occupied one of the patrician homes built in this area from the
end of the thirteenth century onwards. The conversion of the existing structures
for university use began in 1494 and would be concluded at the beginning of
the seventeenth century.
